Question #187
Who baptized the apostles?
Who baptized the 12 disciples of Jesus?
The Answer:
The scripture does not provide an answer to this question. It does provide information that enables a reasonable assumption. The evidence is the same as that relating to the thief on the cross which is discussed in response to Question 122 to which you are referred. That leads to the conclusion that John most likely baptized Christ’s disciples. It could be that John baptized one or two of them and they baptized the remainder.
The thing to remember is that this conclusion is an assumption based upon Biblical evidence, and not a direct statement from scripture. All we know for certain is that John came to make ready a people prepared for the Lord (Luke 1:17). The event for which they were prepared cannot be the birth of Christ because John was not preaching before Jesus was born. When John did preach, he preached the necessity of repentance because of the nearness of the coming kingdom (Matthew 3:2), and the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins (Mark 1:4). Those who were obedient were “prepared for the Lord,” which most reasonably points to preparation for citizenship in the establishment of the Kingdom (Acts 2).
It certainly does no violence to the scripture to conclude that Jesus’ disciples were among those prepared. On the other hand, it disagrees with all that we know about Jesus teaching on the same subject (John 4:1-2), it would seem to do violence to the scripture to conclude that the disciples of Jesus rejected the baptism of John (Luke 7:30). Might not the same be said of those who reject the baptism of the Great Commission today?
