Question #25
Who was Ananias?
Who was Ananias and what role does he play in the Bible?
The Answer:
There are three Ananias’s in the New Testament. The first is in Acts 5. It was he who conspired with his wife, Sapphira, to sell a piece of land and lie to Peter (and to the Holy Spirit) about laying the entire price at the Apostles’ feet while withholding a portion of that price for themselves. Peter declared that while they retained it it was their own, but they lost their lives because they lied about their liberality.
The second Ananias was instructed by Christ to go into Damascus and instruct Paul (the Saul of Tarsus) concerning that which he “must do” (Acts 9:6). Ananias obeyed the Lord and instructed Paul, “ And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16).
The third Ananias was high priest when Paul appeared before the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem. See Acts 23 and 24.
