THAT JESUS FULFILLED PROPHECY?
Lk 24:44 - Jno 1:45
INTRO: The question the Jewish high priest asked of Stephen in Acts 7:1 continues to give us a launching point for some serious questions deserving of thoughtful answers. This morning we consider the question of Jesus and fulfilled prophecy. Some have noted that over 300 Old Testament prophecies were fulfilled in Jesus. Is this so? If it is so, what is the significance of it? In the two verses we have read we hear what both others and Jesus claimed ... that He is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.
I. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF FULFILLED PROPHECY?
A. Deut 18:20-22 The great test
1. is the prophecy from God? is it spurious?
2. if it does not come to pass, there is excellent reason to question its source
3. so, prophecy concerning Jesus must come to pass - or there is good reason to question!
B. Acts 7:51-53 What Stephen claimed?
1. Old Testament prophets did speak of a coming Just One
2. the Jews, under influence of their religious leaders, had murdered Him Who fulfilled those prophecies!
3. those prophecies were from God because they had been fulfilled exactly as they had prophesied
C. So, its a question of credibility
1. can Jesus be believed? is Lk 24:44 true?
2. if the claims Jesus (and others) made to be fulfillment are not true, He cannot be believed ... on the other hand ...
D. And its a question of identity
1. the prophets clearly spoke of the Messiah
2. if Jesus fulfilled those prophecies, He is without doubt the promised Messiah ... and many, many of His contemporaries attested to His having filled those prophecies ... as did Stephen!
II. A BRIEF LOOK AT SOME OF THE PROPHECIES

1. Isa 61:1,2 with Lk 4:17-21 of preaching, of healing, of true deliverance
2. Isa 53:4 with Mt 8:16,17 his miracles of healing, bearing peoples infirmities
3. note Lk 7:19-22 such things, subject of prophecy, confirmed Jesus identity as Messiah
D. Of His death
1. Zech 9:9 with Mt 21:1-5triumphal entry
2. Ps 41:9 with Jno 13:18betrayal by a friend
