Question #365
What about clapping?
Church of Christ members clap hands during the sermon. Is this scriptural? Read or sing during communion? Is this scriptural? Do you have tracts on these? If so I would like to order some.
The Answer:
Please see the answer to Question 127 for the answer to your first question. I assume that the second question refers to the public reading of Scripture during the Lord’s Supper and not one person’s reading silently while the bread and cup are being passed. The scripture does not speak directly to the question. It does say that each of us is to examine himself and partake discerning the Lord’s body. I Cor. 11:28. Without saying that it would be sinful in and of itself to read scripture publicly during the communion, it surely can be said that nothing should be done that would interfere with any person’s introspection or self-examination during the supper. Public reading could certainly fall into this category. Such a practice emanates from the conclusion of congregational leaders that members cannot be trusted to observe the supper with the right frame of mind. Therefore, they need help, and the public reading of scripture is done for that purpose. While this is a noble purpose, that which helps some might well hinder others. The wiser course seems to be to permit each person to decide for himself or herself how to discern the Lord’s body. This answer at least gives the practice the benefit of the doubt. I would hate to think that church leaders are tinkering with the Lord’s Supper for no better reason than that they simply cannot stand silence for that long.
