Question #295
Can you explain Ephesians 6:12?
Can you explain Ephesians 6:12?
The Answer:
In these verses Paul is bringing his letter to a close. He has one last practical suggestion for his readers (vv. 10-11.) The reason for this urgent instruction is the nature of the Christian’s opponent in spiritual warfare. The opponent is not a mere man – flesh and blood — it is Satan and his minions, here called principalities, powers, the rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. These may be the same beings over which Christ triumphed as described in Colossians 2:15. But if they are identical, how can they here constitute a threat? The answer is that they cannot to those who are arrayed in the whole armor of God. To those who reject or who fail to retain the panoply of God, they continue to be a constant threat. Some go to length to distinguish the various “labels” Paul uses; however, Paul may be doing no more than emphasizing the nature of the enemy by using repetition with each term parading the entire demon army before our view.
Many today find the thought of a personal Devil no more than a myth. Even less do they accept the concept of principalities and powers of evil and spiritual rulers of this present darkness. However, we should be slow to reject the biblical terms in which the spiritual warfare and its conflicts are described. We should be hesitant to regard ourselves as wiser than the apostles and our Lord concerning the unseen world. What is most important here is that Paul would not have his readers, or us, underestimate the power of the forces against them.
