Question #145
Is disagreement equal to falling away?
As I understand it, the Jewish Religious bodies consisted of (mainly) the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Were the Sadducees saved even though they did not believe the resurrection of the dead, etc. If so, does that mean that after we have followed the steps of salvation given under the New Covenant (hearing, believing, repenting, confessing, and baptism for forgiveness of sins) if we all do not agree on subjects that are not essential to salvation, that we will be saved? Such subjects as head coverings, “one cup”, classrooms, kitchens in the church building, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, etc. that do not involve obedience to the gospel of Christ and are the source of debate throughout the brotherhood-- is disagreement equal to falling away?
The Answer:
The short answer is no, disagreement is not the same as falling away. There have always been and there will always be disagreements among faithful Christians. But sometimes those disagreements involve matters that affect one’s eternal salvation – and it is at that point that disagreement involves a falling away. One cannot be a faithful Christian and at the same time promote and proclaim false doctrines that lead people away from God and toward Hell. But how can we tell when a disagreement rises to that level? We must turn to God’s word. The Bible is our only source of information regarding what we must do to be saved, and, on those matters, faithful Christians must be of one mind.
