Question #108
Ananias and Sapphira – was their problem ego or greed?
I am interested in your opinion on the text in Acts 5, particularly the story on Ananias and Sapphira. Is the reason they conspired to keep back part of the money based on ego or greed, or maybe both? Could you teach either and be scriptural?
The Answer:
The referenced incident is recorded in Acts 5:1ff. Scripture gives no insight into the inner working of the minds of Ananias and Sapphira. It does, however, give us an insight into the inner working of sin. ”15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” 1 John 2:15-16. “14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” James 1:14-15. the lust of the eyes would certainly include greed; the pride of life is almost a definition of ego. Having been drawn away by both, Ananias and Sapphira sinned. Both may be taught scripturally.
