Question #62
Should we leave a church that blesses and marries homosexuals?
I’m afraid I belong to an unbelieving church, and would like to go to a church that actually believes in the authority of God’s word. They now want to “bless” and marry homosexuals. I believe God loves the homosexual but abhors the practice of homosexuality. Please respond and help with this issue. Should we leave this denomination or stay and fight the battle?
The Answer:
Given the Bible’s teaching on practicing homosexuality, you are absolutely correct. Most churches that have taken the path that the church you attend has taken, have hierarchies or other governing bodies that pretty well preclude members from having much voice in the decision making process. Even if you were to change this particular practice of the church that you attend, there are most certainly other departures from Biblical teaching that would need changing as well. Accordingly, you ought to do as you suggest and find a church that respects the authority of Scripture and follows it. May I suggest that you attend a local congregation of the church of Christ. Please review the lessons on the church and listen to the sermon on “The Undenominational Nature of the Church” available on this website.
