Question #31
When did the church of Christ begin?
My mother is a godly woman and claims to have gotten saved at age 18 or so. I know she was not Biblically saved because she did not obey the Lord’s clear commands for salvation, but I did so myself about two years ago, after joining my local congregation of the Church of Christ. My Mother always asks me to do some research to find out when this “cult” I go to started, because she believes it isn’t the first century church. She believes all the denominations (or most of the people in them) have it right, as long as they just “believe”. I was wondering if you could guide me to some resources or tell me about when and how the church of Christ in America came about. I would be most appreciative, and hopefully so would my mother.
The Answer:
Please review the answer to the Question 30 (“Is The Church of Christ Part of the Reformation?”). The answer to your question will be found there, but notice the reference to the lessons on the church and the sermon on “The Undenominational Nature of the Church.” You will need to review the lessons on the church very carefully. They demonstrate the Biblical First Century basis of the church. The church of Christ did not begin in America. Any church that began after the establishment of the church recorded in Acts 2 began at the wrong time and in the wrong place.
